About Us

Seed2Fork is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sowing seeds for the prevention of Type 2 Diabetes. We achieve this by cultivating connections and fostering Garden STEM Programs, ART, and Demonstration Health Gardens throughout Washington State. A study conducted by Washington State University (Diabetes Epidemic and Action report) followed 4,000 individuals, finding that those who reported worrying about food running out experienced higher rates of diabetes.

Join Seed2Fork to help prevent diabetes and address Food Apartheid. Food apartheid is a system of segregation that divides those with access to an abundance of nutritious food and those who have been denied that access due to systemic injustice. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of our urban and rural communities.

Our Focus

We have firsthand knowledge of the roadblocks and misconceptions that can arise when it comes to addressing urban and rural communities, especially those living in what are often considered 'wrong' zip codes. Over the years, I have dedicated significant time to engaging in extensive conversations with people of color, low-income individuals, and students from various socio-economic backgrounds, posing two fundamental questions:

(1) What do you need to feel safe when entering an unfamiliar environment?

(2) Does anyone truly hear and listen to your story or voice?

In many instances, I have found these profound conversations to be intelligent and articulate, yet without a proper platform for individuals to express their true selves. Seed2Fork is not solely about cultivating food in the soil; it is also about making connections and providing a platform where personal stories and voices can be heard, and meaningful actions can be taken.

Our Values

To care about the 'Earth, People, and Community' has been a longstanding tradition in Black, Latino, and Indigenous societies for hundreds of years. We teach and sow cultural seeds, employing various methods to achieve this goal.

Note - We use words such as 'focus,' 'journey,' 'aim,' and 'emergent' because, in our communities, it's a moving target based on the needs of the moment in time. Words such as 'vision' and 'mission' don't 'fit'.

4 C’s to 21st Center Life Skills

21st-century skills are essential for career pathways in BIPOC, urban, and rural communities. These skills teach the following principles:

Critical thinking- teaches individuals to question claims and seek the truth.

Creativity- encourages unique and innovative thinking.

Collaboration- demonstrates the power of groups in creating something greater than what one can achieve alone.

Communication- instructs how to efficiently convey ideas.

Collectively, these four skills empower communities to function as one-person think tanks.

ART Integration

Allowing students to explore their expressive side through the arts, able them to expand their creative thinking skills, that are necessary to solve complex engineering, science, and math problems. Students are using both sides of their brain.

Project-Based Learning, (PBL)

This learning method allows individuals to actively engage their hearts and minds in real-world, meaningful projects to enhance the relevance of learning. Most of our projects are centered around challenges and problems that our communities are currently facing in the real world.

Science, Technology, Engineering Math (STEM)

STEM education teaches more than just science and mathematics concepts. The emphasis on hands-on learning with real-world applications fosters the development of a wide range of skill sets, including media and technology literacy, productivity, social skills, flexibility, and innovation. Additionally, STEM education instills qualities such as curiosity, effective decision-making, leadership, entrepreneurship, and the ability to embrace failure. Regardless of the future career pathways, these skill sets are preparing our communities to be active participants in the global market.
